SAC Gallery Art Show Themes 2009 -2010

- June 16 -

~Special Places in Siskiyou County

. . . including special places in one’s mind

Juried by:

~Helen Cartwright~ of Dunsmuir

“I love to see how artists capture the unique, surprising beauty found here in Siskiyou County.   It's been my favorite art subject for a few years now, and I can't wait to see what our local artists have created for this particular show.”

~Tatiana Diakoff~ of Mt. Shasta

“Being born in Mt. Shasta, this show theme piqued my interest. I'm curious to see how creative people can get with this topic. Siskiyou County is an inspiring place to live, be, and create and often the reason particular places in this area are so special to people is very personal. I hope to see artwork that reflects and pulls from this place of personal experience and imagination combined; an expression where the physical landscape and the landscape of the mind meet and coalesce.”

~John Rickard~ of Dunsmuir

“I am very excited to jury ‘Special Places in Siskiyou County’ because Siskiyou County is a special place filled with interesting inspiring scenery and interesting inspiring people. A community of artists surrounded by such vivid inspiration is the making for a wonderful show and I am honored to join Tatiana, Helen and SAC for this event.”

- July 14 -

Story Telling

– Illustrative –

encouraging storytellers at the opening and through-out the month.

Juried by:

~Nikolas Allen~ of Mt. Shasta

“I have explored multiple mediums in my lifelong quest for artistic expression including music, painting, spoken word, filmmaking and graphic arts. The common theme in all of these formats is the desire to tell a unique story. I am excited to see and hear the myriad of stories Siskiyou County artists have to share in this exhibit.”

~Michael Murray~ of Mt. Shasta

“Art expresses emotions and ideas in the form of beauty, color, and form. Our community is richer because of these creative expressions of values and joy.”

~Stephanie Shaver~ of Weed

"Evoking emotional responses to someone else's memories and fantasies is always a good time.  I love a good story."

Drawing in the MarginsOutsider Art & Art Brut

-untrained artists and/or people with disabilities-

Juried by:

~Sherry Ackerman, Ph.D.~ of Mt. Shasta

Sherry L. Ackerman, Ph.D., calls her work Art of the Archetypes. She is interested in art brut, finding it transformational, reflective, explorative and self-revealing. Contemplation of the archetypes provides a lens through which one has an opportunity to experience liberation from narrowly individual, egoistic I-ness. Ackerman’s work asks viewers to de-construct every assumption that they have ever held….to ask ‘Why?’ and to become okay with not-knowing. She urges the viewer to suspend the conscious mind and let the unconscious surface…allowing the archetypes to arise….in a journey to liberation from societal conditioning, externally legislated morality and normative thinking. She believes that getting beyond one’s ideas…and discovering the context of one’s own thinking…is liberating.”

~Tony Corsini~ of Mt. Shasta

“Being a juror for the Brut Show has led me to contemplate what untrained art outside the boundaries really is.  I think that untrained artists and artists with disabilities continually try to push the boundaries of what can and should be done because they don’t have the presupposed constraints of a professional artist working towards pleasing an audience.  Their voices have the potential to be radically honest and perhaps deeply insightful. I imagine this show as an attempt for each artist to express a raw, honest viewpoint personally or culturally and take a risk in expressing that unheard or untended inner voice.”

~Lynn Wasser~ of Weed

"Outsider art is important because I believe that Art has become too academic and commercialized. This genre of art-making has heart rather than sound bytes."

- September 18 -

Contrast

Drop Off Art: Monday, September 14th, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Artists Reception: Friday, September 18th

Juried by:

~Marie Wells~ of Mt. Shasta

"Contrast: My favorite principle in art, as well as in life, creating excitement and interest.  An exhibition of unlikeness where opposites or juxtaposed elements produce a dynamic expression always brings warmth to my heart and a smile to my face.

~Parish Cross~ of Mt. Shasta

"Having a child of mine completely enthused by art and watching her produce her style of art, I am whole heartedly excited about this event.  Through my daughter, my family has taken huge strides in the appreciation of art. "

~Lesa Michel~ of Mt. Shasta

"I love the idea of contrasts in art and in life.  Without the darkness, the light isn't as bright . . . without the contrast of an opposing idea, we don't know what we truly value in life.  I'm honored to be part of the upcoming show focusing on contrasts."

Art with a Message

- artists include musicians and writers -

Artists Reception: Friday, October 16th

Juried by:

~Claudia Ellis~ of McCloud

Owner of the Brown Dog Gallery in McCloud.

"Art is one's interpretation of a scene or thought, but all artists will have a different message."

~Brenda Woods~ of Weed

President of the Weed Chamber of Commerce.

"Art is sometimes an emotional, cerebral, or nonverbal extension of human communication.  One of the biggest challenges of the human race, it seems, is getting our message out to others.  As an artist, I love "the sweet spot," that moment when the right viewer meets up with the right art, and the two understand one another. Do you have a message?  Say it with ART."

Juried by:

~Chris Messer~ of Mt. Shasta

"As a juror, I look for creative spirit embodied by fine craftsmanship, using the tools of an artist:  form, texture, shape, color, line and mood.

"

~Lewis Meyers, Jr.~ of Montague

Owner of the Turn of the Century Fine Arts Gallery in Weed.

"I have always believed that the business of an artist is to create tomorrow's heirlooms, and that is what this show is about."
